3 tips to avoid arguments with difficult family members this Christmas!

Are you dreading spending Christmas with THAT family member who drives you potty? You just know you'll be triggered by this person and potentially have an unpleasant argument - they have no off-switch, they speak too loudly, they are very opinionated about views which are not yours, they drink too much and get even louder and MORE opinionated, and then criticise you for being unfriendly and unwelcoming! And that's BEFORE they get started on the criticism of your cooking, the gift you begrudgingly bought them, and the space they take up in your home, hearth and head.

We have all had experiences like this, whether it's the family member of your spouse that you can't NOT invite, or a relative that would otherwise be on their own and part of you just couldn't let that happen.

What can you do to ensure the big day runs smoothly and avoid having an argument??

Remember you have little ability to control the behaviour of other people but you CAN do the following:

* Remember that they are likely to be unhappy. It can be hard to show compassion to someone you dislike but it can go a long way in helping you communicate without defensiveness.

* Take a few deep breaths, leave the room and decompress if you feel your annoyance or anger rising. This tells your nervous system that you are safe! It lowers your defences.

* Go for a walk! It can be so helpful, and it gives you a slightly longer opportunity to grab that much needed space.

I hope these three simple tips can help you avoid an argument this Christmas. And don't forget to enjoy yourself! It's your day too!
